Background
In December 2010 one of the founders, when still a nursing student, was part of a mission conference in Kenya called Commission. This was an eye opener for her about the facts and need for mission.
A desire to have every medical professional be trained and encouraged in regard to mission was strongly born in her heart. As a result, medical Missions Seminars were birthed, the first one being at Mulago School of nursing and midwifery in 2011. These seminars have evolved but still held annually since then. During the medical seminars, a desire was born to start an association for the Christian professionals that would help them to continue fellowship even after school.
There were already many such fellowships but none specifically for nurses and midwives in Uganda. However, it was realized that there was already an international body for nurses called Nurses Christian Fellowship International which had been in existence since 1958. The things that were being done by this international body were a great guide for the birth of the Nurses and Midwives Christian fellowship of Uganda.
In May 2021 Nurses and Midwives Christian Fellowship Uganda officially joined Nurses Christian Fellowship International as a country member.
The first and vision casting meeting was held on 16th April 2016 in Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery, attended by 13 nurses and midwives.
Vision
Is to see Christian Nurses and Midwives in Uganda living out their Faith in their professional Practice.
Mission
To equip and encourage Christian Nurses and Midwives to integrate Biblical Principles and Christ- Centered Values within Clinical Practice, Leadership, Education and Research
Our Core Values
As Christians the written word of God is our final and ultimate authority on all matters of faith and life.
We do what we do because Christ has loved us...in response to his Love. we go out and love others like He has
loved us.
Just as the Nurses motto says that we have been chosen by God to love and serve.
Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another's suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. In Luke 7:13 (When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.”)
As Christian nurses and midwives we need to have compassion as we care for our patients...most times we encounter them when in pain, fear, worry, stressed etc. Being rude makes their situation worse.
We believe that we should be excellent in all that we do and our services should be offered with competence. This is why we continually invest in ourselves to be Nurses and Midwives that offer quality care to our patients/clients as evidenced in our intentional weekly and monthly programing that prioritize growth of members.
Integrity can be defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. As Christian Nurses and Midwives we want to be people of unquestionable Integrity valuing truthfulness as a virtue in God's children.
The Lord Jesus Christ is our greatest model when it comes to serving...even though he was God...He came to serve and not to be served....and he demonstrated in scripture by washing the feet of his disciples.
NMCF Focus Areas
At NMCFU, our work centers on helping nurses and midwives grow in faith, excellence, and service. Through these focus areas, we equip members to live out their Christian calling, impact their workplaces, and extend God’s love to the communities they serve.
Discipleship
At NMCFU, we believe that true transformation begins with walking closely with Christ. Our discipleship focus helps nurses and midwives grow deeper in their personal relationship with God through Bible study, fellowship, and spiritual mentoring. We encourage members to live out their faith daily—both in their workplaces and communities—becoming shining examples of Christ’s love, compassion, and integrity in the health sector.
Professional Development
We are committed to nurturing well-rounded professionals who serve with both skill and heart. Through seminars, workshops, and continuous learning opportunities, NMCFU helps members sharpen their knowledge and abilities while upholding Christian ethics in their service. We believe that professional excellence goes hand in hand with spiritual growth, empowering nurses and midwives to bring healing and hope wherever they work.
Mentorship
Mentorship is at the heart of our community. We intentionally connect experienced nurses and midwives with students and younger professionals to walk alongside them in faith, career, and personal growth. These relationships provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability, helping mentees navigate the challenges of the profession with confidence and a clear sense of purpose. Through mentorship, we build a strong legacy of Christian leadership in nursing and midwifery.
Research and Publication
NMCFU encourages evidence-based practice and the sharing of knowledge through research and publication. We promote studies that explore the intersection of faith, health, and service—highlighting how Christian values can enhance patient care and workplace ethics. By publishing findings and sharing insights, we contribute to national and global conversations on healthcare delivery, ethics, and the spiritual dimensions of healing.
Missions
Missions are central to who we are. We believe every nurse and midwife is a vessel of God’s love, called to serve not only in hospitals but also in communities that need both physical and spiritual care. Through outreach programs, medical camps, and community engagements, NMCFU members share the gospel, offer healthcare, and bring hope to the underserved. Our mission work reminds us that nursing is not just a profession—it’s a ministry.
Institutional Development
For NMCFU to grow and continue impacting lives, we invest in building strong systems and structures that support our vision. This includes strengthening leadership, expanding partnerships, improving communication, and ensuring sustainability. Through institutional development, we aim to position the fellowship for long-term impact—equipping us to serve members better and extend our reach to more nurses and midwives across Uganda.
